Pianist Jutta Hipp — who also showed considerable talent as a painter and poet — was the first white female instrumentalist ever signed by Blue Note Records. She recorded four albums for the label in the mid-1950s, one of them as a leader with saxophonist Zoot Sims. Her remarkable career in Germany and the United States spanned merely a decade before she drifted off into obscurity until a 2003 obituary in The New York Times brought her briefly back into the limelight and to the attention of jazz historian and journalist Katja von Schuttenbach (M.A. Jazz History & Research, Rutgers University), who has been researching Hipp's fascinating life ever since.
