In Lenox, Massachusetts, between 1951 and 1960 at a place called Music Inn, there was a turning point in the history of music in America. Music Inn began with informal jazz and folk roundtables of scholars and critics and culminated in the first School of Jazz – where students learned from and performed with accomplished masters. While the rest of the nation lived under the weight of segregation, the participants at Music Inn enjoyed a temporary escape, proving that music knows no colors. This film’s Washington, D.C. premiere will be given by drummer George Schuller, the film’s co-producer, who will be on hand to discuss the creation of this important documentary that shows the birth of jazz education and scholarship and tells the story of jazz as folk music, concert music, and world music. Recital Hall (Performing Arts - Bldg. 46 West).
